How does ArcGIS 9 differ from ArcView 3?

All the features of ArcView 3 are included with ArcGIS 9 however the way that you access these features will differ to ArcView 3. ArcGIS 9 also adds many new features driven by user requests

How does ArcGIS 10 differ from ArcGIS 9?

All the features of ArcView 9 are included with ArcGIS 10. The look and feel of ArcGIS 10 is different to ArcGIS 9 and many workflows (especially editing) have changed. ArcGIS 10 also adds many new features driven by user requests

What GIS options are there for Mac users?

Mac users will be able to run ArcGIS 9 and 10 provided they install and run the software on the Windows platform using parallel operating system software.

What is a School Campus Licence?

The Esri School Campus Licence is a product that your school can purchase. This entitles your school to install ArcGIS 9 or 10 on multiple machines across one campus and for teachers to install on their home computers or laptops. The School Campus Licence comes with ArcView 9 or 10 as well as the Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst and Network Analyst extensions for use on all machines.

What is the Our World resource?

The Our World series is an updated version of the Mapping our World book. The series has been expanded to cover those just learning how to use GIS software and to cover those using the software to make local decisions or address local issues. There are four books that scaffold the reader through all of the GIS skills required for modern students.

What is the difference between a School Campus Licence and the Our World resources?

The Our World series of resources are four books that contains a range of lessons for use in the classroom as well as a trial version of ArcGIS 9 that can be installed across your school's network.

The School Campus Licence provides your school with the latest version of ArcGIS that can be installed on multiple machines across the school (as well as teachers’ home computers). The School Campus Licence entitles you to 12 months worth of technical support and software upgrades. It will also not time-out.

What do I get when I purchase the School Campus Licence?

 The School Campus Licence contains:

  • A copy of ArcGIS that can be installed on up to 500 machines across the school and on teachers' home computers or laptops
  • ArcGIS Spatial Analyst, ArcGIS 3D Analyst and ArcGIS Network Analyst extensions
  • Esri Data and Maps folder
  • Explore Your World lesson booklet and poster
  • GIS for Education CD
  • Esri Map Book

How do I purchase a copy of the School Campus Licence?

 You can order a copy of ArcView by contacting us at gistraining@eagle.co.nz . You will need to provide us with a purchase order and 3 signed copies of the licence agreement which you can request via email . Please ensure that you print 3 original copies and have them signed by an authorised school representative.

From that point, we will order the software from Esri in the US and it will be sent to you via courier when it arrives in New Zealand. Allow 2-3 weeks in total for delivery.

How do I configure ArcGIS 9 or 10?

When your IT department begins the installation process, the 'Complete' installation configuration will suit most schools.

What do I install?

You need to install the ArcGIS Software and extensions that comes in a folder with your software package, take the 'Complete' installation option when prompted . You can install additional datasets if you wish to get going with the software. Your installation is complete when you are able to access ArcMap, ArcCatalog and the Desktop Administrator if you navigate through the Start Menu-->All Programs-->ArcGIS.

Where do I get data to get started?

The School Campus Licence comes with a folder containing basic global data such as UN Development data and satellite images from all of the world's regions. You could also ask your local council if they are willing to provide local data (such as imagery or shapefiles) to help get you started. See our GIS Resources page for more advice on getting data.

Where do I get lessons to use in the classroom?

The best place to access lessons for use in your classroom is the Esri ArcLessons page . Here teachers across the globe have uploaded their own in-class lessons and data for others to use in class or as inspiration.
